Great Wall Institute: The Process of the Great Wall of Los Angeles

Revolutionary Voices of Dissent

This section reflects on four different American Political Prisoners from the 1970s. A political prisoner is someone who is imprisoned for their political beliefs, most often by their own government. The Political Prisoners section of the Great Wall of LA features American Indian Movement (AIM) member and Indigenous Rights activist Leonard Peltier, Black Liberation Army (BLA) member Assata Shakur, former Black Panther Party member Mumia Abu-Jamal, and activist, author, and academic Angela Davis. Each of their portraits are rendered on FBI Wanted posters to highlight their past and present political incarceration. Angela Davis is shown stepping out of her poster acknowledging her release as well as her continued activism in speaking out against the carceral system. On the wanted sign of Leonard Peltier, the word “Commuted” has been added to point to the recent lessening of his sentence on January 19th, 2025, by President Biden, due to Peltier’s advanced age and declining health.
