My essay, “Gay Awareness,” came out in Bridge in February 1975 It served as the first gay Asian male manifesto. A letter writer to Bridge had several years earlier written about being gay and Asian. Hung Nung’s letter was published in Bridge. He wrote in part: “I won’t pretend that I’m not gay. I’m proud to be Asian. And the two are not mutually exclusive.” I began my essay with a quote from Nung, suggesting that it was “scandalous” that the issues he raised in his letter were still not being addressed by activists in the Asian American movement.plain2023-04-03T23:13:15+00:00February 1975Gina Leonf0ac362b4453e23ee8a94b1a49fbeeafde2a0a49
