During the Convention, she called for the inclusion of gay rights in the party’s platform for the year. Following her speech, she became a member of the Democratic Committee and worked within the party for the acceptance of gays and lesbians. She also taught the first course on lesbianism in the U.S. at the University of Buffalo in New York.
